Time is Money

Do you find it difficult to stay on task when studying or when at work? In all honestly, we all struggle on certain days and in certain instances with remaining focused. The real question is, how do you manage your lack of focus or do you allow it to manage you?

One of my favorite sayings is “You are the captain of your own ship 🛳,” in other words YOU determine which direction you go, the route that’s taken, how long you stop for a rest break or mini vacay, and what your journey is like. Applying this framework to being focused, consider arriving at your destination being equivalent to completing a task, and the route that is taken being equivalent to the varying options of time spans and mileage that can be selected for your trip. In the end all that matters is that you arrive at your destination or get the task completed, but at the core is your focus, or lack there of, which determines how long it will take you to arrive.

The bottom line is, staying focused is closely related to managing your time wisely, and it’s all about choices 🔑. It’s up to you to decide if you would like to take the scenic route that’s a little higher in mileage and time (Option 1), or if you’d like to take the route with very little distractions and has rest stops only when needed (Option 2), or power through the journey while fasting (Option 3). While each option has its own set of pros and cons, you have to choose which is best for you considering the task that must be completed.

Question from a Subscriber: How do you stay focused?

On a typical day, my gold standard is Option 2, the route with very little distractions and rest stops only when needed. Considering my workload (or what I call my “to-do list”) remaining focused while studying and working is essential to freeing up time for activities that I can enjoy upon completing my tasks/reaching my destination for the day. This goes back to being disciplined (SEE PREVIOUS POST 😉) and being intentional about my use of time. To me, time is money, and neither can be wasted while I’m embarking upon my journey. 🔑 My goal is always to receive the best “bang for my buck”, and by remaining focused is how I ensure my efficiency.

Efficient- (adj.) a system or machine achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense…of a person working in a well-organized and competent way.

Tips for Staying Focused & Managing Time= Being Efficient

  1. Work within time periods…it takes discipline, but try making yourself focus on a task for 30 minutes uninterrupted
  2. Take breaks…dedicate 5 minutes to resting after successfully completing your uninterrupted time period (scroll on social media, respond to text messages, get some fresh air or a snack, whatever you need)…then start another 30 minute time period
  3. Challenge yourself…Once you’ve done this for maybe a week or so and mastered staying on task for 30 minutes, increase your uninterrupted time to 40 minutes and so forth.
  4. Use an alarm…set a 30 minute and 5 minute notification on your phone to hold yourself accountable 🔑

Essentially, it’s a mind game. Remind yourself why it’s important for you to stay focused and how this uninterrupted time ultimately frees up time for you to enjoy other activities later. You can do it. Try it out and let me know how it goes 😉

Motivational Scripture 🙏🏽

Ephesians 5:15-16- “So keep strict watch that how you walk is not as unwise but as a wise person, making the best use of your time.”

Rachael
